Abstract: We discuss epidemic modeling in a spatial context while reviewing some of the accomplishments and shortcomings of mean-field models. We present results of a cellular automata model with both local and long-range infection that displays self-sustained oscillations associated with waves of infection. This calls for a reevaluation of the role of environmental forcing. Finally, we address future developments of computer simulations in epidemiology.
